This recipe is my take on traditional Ayurvedic golden milk, turned into a warm, nourishing bowl of morning oats. The pungent spices help kindle agni, and bring warmth and circulation to the body, making this a quick and grounding breakfast in the colder months. I love using fresh ginger and turmeric when possible, but if Pitta is elevated, opt for the dried spices and use a lighter hand with the ginger and turmeric to keep the oatmeal more gentle. Fresh ginger and turmeric are more sharp and heating, when dried they become more mild.
PREP: 5 minutes | COOK: 10–12 minutes | YIELD: 2 servings
Ingredients
2 cups water
1 cup gluten-free rolled oats
¼ cup raisins or chopped pitted dates
1 inch fresh ginger root, grated (or ½ teaspoon ground ginger)
1 inch fresh turmeric root, grated (or ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
1 teaspoon ghee
Pinch mineral salt
Optional: coconut flakes, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, nuts of choice
Instructions
Bring the water to a boil in a medium saucepan. If using fresh ginger and turmeric, add them to the water and simmer for 2–3 minutes to infuse. Stir in the oats and reduce the heat to medium-low; cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats are tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Stir in the raisins or dates, cinnamon, cardamom, and mineral salt, then remove from the heat. Divide between bowls and top with ghee and any desired toppings.
If using ground ginger and turmeric, add them to the oats along with the cinnamon and cardamom rather than steeping them first.
Cooking Notes
Notes on sweeteners: Raisins give the oatmeal a sweet, tart flavor and an iron-rich boost. Medjool dates make it softer, richer, and more caramel-like with low glycemic impact. You can also omit these for a sugar-free option.
Make it creamier: For a richer oatmeal, replace ½ cup of the water with milk or unsweetened plant milk, or stir in an additional teaspoon of ghee before serving.
Dosha Notes
V: Enjoy as is
P: Used dried spices instead of fresh
K: Use raisins instead of dates
