This Ayurvedic tonic supports restful sleep while nourishing overall vitality. Soaked almonds, ghee, sweet dates, honey, and saffron are all traditionally considered rasayanas—foods that nourish and build vitality. Rasa means “essence” or “juice,” and ayana means “path,” making rasayana a pathway to ojas, the subtle essence associated with strength, resilience, and immunity. Stress, poor diet, irregular routines, difficult emotions, and lack of connection can deplete Ojas. Ayurveda supports its restoration through nourishing foods, healthy daily rhythms, meditation, mindful movement, time in nature, and supportive herbs.
Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, and Yashtimadhu (licorice) are considered medhya rasayanas—rejuvenative herbs used to nourish and calm the mind while supporting memory, focus, cognitive function, and a balanced nervous system. Often described as Ayurvedic nootropics, they support mental clarity while helping to settle stress and mental activity, creating greater ease for relaxation and restorative sleep. Traditionally, these herbs are paired with something sweet and a little fat to support their absorption and delivery into the tissues.
PREP: 15 minutes + soaking time | COOK: 3-5 minutes | YIELD: 2 servings
Ingredients
Fresh Almond Milk:
1 cup raw almonds, soaked overnight
4 cups filtered water
pinch mineral salt
Sleep Tonic:
2 cups fresh almond milk (or milk of choice)
2 pitted dates
2 teaspoons ghee
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
4-5 threads saffron
Optional: ¼ teaspoon rasayana herbs
Instructions
To make the almond milk: Place the almonds in a bowl and cover with filtered water. Soak 4-6 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse well, remove the skins from the almonds, then place the almonds in high-speed blender. Add the water and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth and frothy. Pour through a nut milk bag, cheesecloth, or fine mesh strainer to separate the pulp from the liquid. Store the milk in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 3-4 days.
To make the sleep tonic: In a small saucepan, lightly heat the almond milk until warm, not boiling. If over-boiled, the almond milk will curdle and separate. Transfer to a blender and add the remaining ingredients. Pulse until combined. Pour into a mug and sip slowly an hour before bed.
Cooking Notes
If you do not have a blender, keep the milk in the pot and whisk in the ghee, herbs, and spices. To sweeten, use one teaspoon of maple syrup or unrefined sugar instead of the dates.
If you don’t want to make the almond milk, use an organic whole milk or coconut milk instead. When buying store-bought nut milks, make sure they have minimal ingredients (ie. nuts, water, salt). Elmhurst and Califia Farms are good brands.
If using whole milk, bring the milk to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for a few minutes. This helps make the milk easier to digest and reduces its cold, congesting qualities, which are traditionally understood to contribute to the formation of ama. For a lighter beverage, you can also use a 1:1 ratio of milk and water.
Dosha Notes
V: Use nutmeg instead of cardamom
P: Enjoy cooled to room temperature or just slightly warm
K: Reduce ghee and dates
