Recipe Box: Taos Blue Corn Muffins

Taos has always held a fond place in my heart. There’s something so special about its many micro climates, of vast horizons over the sage spotted mesa, the white cotton candy-like clouds painting shadows and light across the expansive views, the cold mountain streams tracing pathways through the aspens. It takes my breath away every time.

My dear friend and I have been making annual trips to Taos for the last …

Recipe Box: Turmeric Ginger Oatmeal

Before I left for Kauai, my mom came to visit and provide her loving motherly support in my move.  As all doting mothers do, they cook and clean and just generally make life better. Love you, Mom. For several mornings in a row, she kept offering to make me her favorite new oatmeal creation for breakfast. I resisted and resisted, insisting that I really didn’t eat oatmeal any more for XY&Z …

Recipe Box: Maple Spice Granola

This is my tried-and-true granola recipe. It’s versatile and easy to modify flavor combinations using a variety of fruits and nuts to shift the seasonal focus – think chocolate/cherry, banana/walnut, coconut/apricot and more. This holiday variety uses warming spices and mix of fresh apples and dried cherries, it has a bit of fruitcake quality with it’s cinnamon, citrus, ginger and fruit combo.

Both of these recipes – …

Recipe Box: Brown Rice Porridge with Rhubarb Ginger Compote

I’ve never been a big savory breakfast eater, let alone much of a breakfast eater at all. Give me a big mug or two of tea and I’m content until lunch time. But in the days where the mornings are chilly and I wake up with a big appetite, porridge is my go-to. If you couldn’t tell already, I’m a big fan of breakfast porridge.

Recipe Box: Ayurvedic Breakfast Porridge with Stewed Fruit

In Ayurveda, it is said that it is more important how you eat, rather than exactly what you eat. A meal prepared in a loving, peaceful way contains more prana than one that has been prepared in anger or discord. Equally, a meal shared in gratitude has a sattvic effect on the body and mind.  Taking from the old adage “you are what you eat”, wouldn’t you want to eat a meal that …

Recipe Box: Turmeric, Banana & Blood Orange Muffins

It was a beautiful sunny Saturday, I had all the windows wide open in the house, music playing loud and the sweet promise of spring elevated my spirits.  Then, just like that, I woke up to inches of snow and ice the next morning and dreams of sundresses and ripe fruit sunk back into the quiet folds of my heart. Oh, I have never been a cold weather girl …

Recipe Box: Maca Maple Amaranth Porridge + Rosemary Red Juice

In September, I was given the task by my Ayurvedic practitioner to avoid cold, raw foods in my diet until spring. That meant no more giant green smoothies bowls for breakfast (gasp!). As a former raw food chef, I would have protested this request and refused the notion that the very thing I believed to be most nourishing could actually be creating imbalance in my body!

I first began my raw …
